EGT Gauge Installation

I installed a new AutoMeter EGT Gauge on my 95 U-240 Cat 3116.  I used a 4' wooden dowel rod.  I just taped the 18 gauge lamp cord to the dowel and pushed it between the bays in the wire trough in the center top of my bays.  The front and read pass-thru was tight.  I cut a 2 1/8" hole in dash for the gauge.  My muffler shop welded the bun in the exhaust pipe.  The hook-up on both ends are by the manual.  It works great.  Idle - 400-600 deg.  WOT take off it ran up to 900 deg.  running easy at 60mph -  800 deg.

More to come as I know more after my next trip.  here are a few pics.  Gauge is showing last idle temp when key shut off.

Add 200-300 degrees to the reading for an accurate number at the exhaust manifold or turbo hot side intake. It looks like yours is in the exhaust pipe after the turbo. The further the probe is from the turbo, the lower the reading will be.

Yes Pierce, I agree with you on that.  I just took the easy path and will add maybe 500 degs.

As long as you know about the loss, you can just add the degrees like you said and it will get you in the ballpark. Good deal.

Update after trip from Lufkin,TX to Frederickburg,TX
  Left on Sept. 29, 2021 came home Oct 2, 2021
  Temperature low: 70 deg.  high 84 deg.
  The hills are short and like roller coaster most of the way.
  Top speed towing Chevy HHR 62 mph. Most hills my Cat 3116 will not maintain 62 mph
  Allison MD3060R I ran in 5th gear most of the trip, I don't like the up/down shift on the hills.
  Engine RPM @ 62mph in 5th gear is 2250rpm, @WOT takeoff 600rpm - 2650rpm shift points.
  The gauge moves quickly and smoothly. 
  Highest reading on gauge over the trip 10 (10x100)=1000 deg. engine rpm falling under 2000 with WOT in 5th gear.
  Lowest reading on gauge over the trip 4 (4x100)= 400 deg.  engine at idle.
  WOT takeoff 4 --> 9 (400 --> 900) slowly rises until speed reaches 62 in 5th and then falls back to 8 (8x100)=800 deg.
  Coasting @ 62 mph reading falls from 8 (8x100) = 800 deg. down to 5 - 6 (500 - 600) deg.
All reading are on the gauge and must have 300 - 500 deg. added  to be exhaust port temps.  All in all the more fuel the higher the gauge reading.  Engine temp does NOT seam to have a large effect on the temps of the exhaust.  At WOT engine rpm has more effect.  I like the gauge, I am not sure what will make the exhaust temp go higher.  What will happen at outside temps in the 100's?
Next year I will know that answer!

Pat,

Very familiar with your drivetrain (from our 1993 U240).

Unless on steep grades, try leaving it in "D" and selecting economy mode.  That will keep it from shifting nearly as much.

60 MPH in 6th gear is also a sweet spot for MPG.

From my experience, each 1* ambient temp increase will increase EGT by 1.4*.  So if it's 50* out and goes to 80*, then that extra 30* will yield about 42* more EGT just from intake air temp.

I've got the probe installed in my manifold, but have not yet spent the time to fish the wire from the front to the back...maybe once it's under the 90's.  :)

I think if you do some checking there are some spare wires pulled from the front to the back, check in the area behind the dash. In front of the steering wheel. The PO used some on mine

I know there are some spares in there, which I may be able to use as a pull line, but I have to pull my wire as it's that special thermocouple wire.  I don't have the separate amp/headunit like the OP does.
