Raccoons in engine compartment prevention

Raccoons in engine compartment prevention

A few months ago, a few Raccoons found our engine a comfortable home.

Recent preventions seem to be working very well.

We are in a campground with hookups and human habituated raccoons, near water and wooded areas.  Internet says most raccoons are nocturnal.  We hear trash can lids being pushed off and dropped to the pavement, then watch them empty trash containers.  Most activity is between midnight and 4am, but with them being so very quiet, who knows when they are about.

After several unsuccessful tries, including Pine Sol, found that lights AND ammonia keep them away from our motorhome.

Three 30" dual-tube LED lamps ($22 Home Depot) in engine area, later adding two more under transmission.

We use Walmart ammonia ($1, 64-oz) in a hand-pump sprayer.  Every evening after dark, we spray the ground under & around motorhome.

With ammonia having corrosive properties, we do not spray ammonia on coach parts.

We also have bright Wagan EL8570 solar LED lights ($21 Amazon) hanging on side of motorhome that turn on when sensing motion.  They do not seem to be much of a deterrent, but do let us know a raccoon may be out there.

Something that probably works to deter and notify us something is in engine, are several strategically placed wireless motion alerts.  ($15 Harbor Freight 57937)  They sound off in engine compartment and inside coach.

So far, So good
