Hole in oil filter

Was heading up to Whistler and as I was going through Squamish I had a check engine
light come on and then go off. Checking Silverleaf gauges and the oil pressure was down
about 6 to 7 lbs. I thought that was strange so was watch in the gauge closely and when I
could I pulled over. The idle pressure was normal. Went and pulled the dipstick and the oil
was way down. Found the oil filter had a hole in it. Luckily I have a Sister-in-law living in
Squamish so in the morning she picked me up and I picked up a new filter and oil, repaired
it and then gave up the idea of skiing as there would be no parking available at that time of
day so that's it on skiing for this year and came home.

Would love to see a picture of that.

Does it look like it was punctured, or did it simply fail?

It looks like rocks had hit it and finally pushed a hole through it. I have a snow tires
on and they could throw the small stones. I will find a way to protect it now. This is
a first for me. I have never seen an oil filter failure.

I always carry spare filters. Just never know which one you might need at which time!

I carry spare fuel filters but I never expected to need an oil filter. I was lucky that they
had the filter and I needed oil so it all worked out.

If the filter was pounded threw from the rocks, I can't imagine there is any corrosion anywhere. All polished down to bare metal. Bigger bolder mud flaps.

Ya, in my whole lifetime and untoward hundreds of "vehicles" (cars, trucks, boats, motorhomes .....)with oil filters, have only had one that failed.

That was on our boat in the Abacos.  Changed oil in Marsh Harbor as we began heading back from our winter in the Bahamas to the U.S. and Texas.  By the time we got to Spanish Cay, there was a couple of ounces of oil in the bilge. NOT ON MY BOAT! 

The weld/crimp where the base was attached to the body of the filter was leaking.  No problem, I have an extra filter.  BUT (yes BIG BUT) did not carry enough oil for an extra oil change. Could have just changed the filter, but the engine had 40 hours on it and wanted to start fresh if we could.

Nearest "store" was two days sail behind us.  Walked the dock to see if anyone had any Shell Rotella T I could buy. Captain (hired captain) of the 120' megayacht at the end of the dock said sure, that is what we use.  Can I buy a couple of gallons? Answer is, no you can't buy it, but can certainly have it.  BUT (yes, BIG BUT) his oil is in 55 gallon drums-- no containers.  Finally found some empty gallon oil containers at the small air field on the island.  Yes, we have oil!

Wouldn't take money, but we had shot 5 lobster that day.  So Dianne made a big serving of her famous lobster dip and took it to them.

We were leaving the next morning at sunrise to head back to the U.S.  Dianne was "accosted" on her way back from pre-dawn "last real shower for awhile" and asked by gruff large German guy: "DID YOU MAKE THAT DIP?" You can imagine Dianne wondering if someone got sick, etc.  No, the guy was the chef on the boat and the owners liked it so much he just had to have the receipt. Dianne came back to the boat and wrote it down for him.

And, with that we departed for the 150 mile crossing back to Lake Worth Inlet (West Palm).

Ah, North Sea oil $$$.  The kids on board (9 and 11) each had a Segway that they rode everywhere. We were waiting for one of them to ride off the dock.  But, they were pretty good on them.

What a great "sea story", and not really that unusual.  Always a wonderful experience around every corner when cruising.

Would get a Fleetgard or Amsoil brand,thicker casing.

Have had several requests for Dianne's lobster dip.

This receipt is for dip for 4 people.  Easily doubles/triples.

Lobster Dip

3 oz cream cheese, softened
1 Tbs mayonnaise
1 Tbs dry sherry
1 tsp onion juice, or 1 Tbs onion puree (VERY finely chopped onion)
1 Tbs lemon juice
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp curry powder
1 tsp minced chives
1 4 oz lobster tail, steamed and finely chopped

Blend first 7 ingredients with a hand mixer until smooth. Stir in chives and chopped lobster. Serve with water crackers.

Sorry I threw it in the garbage. It was a small crack at the front and inside of the filter
about 2 to 3 inches from the bottom. The biggest thing that confused me was the
drop in oil pressure. No pressure I understand.

Looks good. Was thinking about crab instead but it costs twice as much. Will try the lobster.

This was our "go to" for appetizers in the Bahamas.  Always shot at least 100 in our winters over there.  This is a "different animal" than the Maine lobster. bahamian lobster - Google Search

But, yes you can use crab, smoked oysters, etc.

Hi everyone, a newbie here. I use to be a truck driver for 38 years and always carried 2 extra filters of each just in case. You never know what can happen. I have always used Baldwin oil filters and fuel filters. My opinion is they're one of the best out there. The other thing is they're less money than most of the other ones. Keep your maintenance up on these engines and they will last. I sold 2 of my trucks both with over a million miles. Take care of them and they'll be good to you. Hope I'm not sounding like a know it all.
