King Controls for fast idle and cruise control only

I'm well on my way to completing the conversion from King Controls to air-throttle. Debating whether to throw out the King Controls all together, or keep it for cruise control and fast idle, but I don't understand how those two work. In fact, they may not work at all, so I want to know how to test.
Since the King pedal is no longer installed and sending a signal to the control box, I assume the King just takes signals from the "smart steering wheel." To go from slow idle to fast idle, the King would wind the cable slightly, pulling on the throttle lever? And to operate cruise control, it would do what? The cable right now, with engine off, is attached to the throttle lever. When the lever is activated by the air-throttle pedal, the King cable wants to be pushed back up through the sheath toward the King box, but it's not a push/pull cable so that doesn't go very well.
