Deadbolt Replacement
Didn't know this until I had to replace our Dexter deadbolt lock on the entry door of our GV.
The Dexter unit has an "add-on" to the original 2-3/4" setback bolt that makes the Dexter deadbolt a 5" setback (the distance from the edge of the door to the hole for the locking mechanism.
It is NOT transferable to a new deadbolt.
Kwikset bought Dexter and the barrel housing for the deadbolt is now round where the old Dexter housing was oval.
So you have to buy the 1-3/4" to 2-3/4" setback unit and then buy a separate 5" setback deadbolt off the internet from Kwikset.
If you don't go this route you will have to put a new 2-1/8" diameter hole closer to the edge of the door, plug the existing hole somehow, and then have to actuate the deadbolt mechanism up in an awkward access corner of the screen door.
Reason for all this? Some dumbass was trying to figure out why turning the key to extend the deadbolt was so difficult near the completion of the bolt extension. While dumbass's back was turned the wind came up and slammed the open door (with the deadbolt extended) and the impact caused the extended deadbolt to move outward enough that the 33 year old guts shifted and fell apart.
