Transfer Switch Failed

Transfer switch failed and I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a replacement. I have the original 2003 Maverick transfer switch and it has failed on the shore power side. I see a lot of complaints about loud buzzing coming from the Replacements anyone have a good experience with there new transfer switch and want to share their information. Thanks Mike

Mike,

Have you considered rebuilding the one you have?  You may have a bad contactor coil that on some contactors are replaceable. If the contactor is bad/burnt up you can find a new on at most electrical supply store or off the net. Repairing will sure save you a $ or 2.

I replaced mine with a manual transfer switch on the recommendation of a few of the guys here. In 20-20 hindsight, it was one of the better decisions I've made with the coach. Reliable, dead quiet (no buzzing), and simple operation. I went with the Blue Sea 9093

Elliott, As I am not very electrically inclined, the 9093 switch has off, shore and generator.  Where or how does the Inverter tie in?  I assumed, apparently incorrectly, the Inverter would need a switch spot too.

Yes Mike I have thought of that  if I was home that's what I would do, just a PITA to do on the road.

Elliott did you mount the switch in the electrical bay?

No, mounted under the foot of the bed. I'd hate to need my generator while driving only to realize I have to pull over to change the transfer switch. This way my copilot can run back there and change it if needed. Or when it's raining. Or when you're just tired and get inside after hooking up at an RV park and realize you forgot to change it over. All the wiring is already there where you need it under the bed on my coach.

Not Elliott, but to answer your question...the ATS under discussion in this thread (Switching Relay #1) is the one that switches between shore power and generator power.  This box has nothing to do with the inverter.  The inverter is controlled by a second ATS (Switching Relay #2).  If you have the Owner's manuals for your coach, you should find (somewhere in the books) an electrical schematic labeled A-2700.25 (110V Relay System).  Looking at that diagram (reproduced below) you will find the ATS being discussed here in the top center of the diagram.

Link to some photos of a manual transfer switch installation (Reply #5).  I used the Blue Sea 9019.  On my coach I only needed to connect three wires for each position on the switch (red, white and black).

@MarkC I removed my 2nd transfer switch that was just for the inverter and run everything through the manual one now. My inverter is always inverting to the subpanel, even when hooked up to shore power (it's a hybrid inverter, so it's just pass-through electricity in that case). I've attached my very sophisticated wiring diagram of my coach.

When my shore / gen set  transfer switch died, this is what I replaced with. And the awful buzzing went away. It was plug and play for me, other than rerouting wires to cut the ends that were burnt from connection terminals not being tight. They sell a electric lock tight for breaker boxes, I used that. Works great. Although slow delivery. I think it took about 2 weeks to get it.

So after re-checking the transfer switch, I caught the nueteral leg floating or going hot tripping the transfer switch, I had to completely disconnect from the power plug to get the transfer switch to reset, moved to a different RV space and problem solved. Lucky catch on the nueteral going hot. It was fine every other time I checked it.
