Anti rattle clips on brake pads

I have a question regarding the anti rattle clips on the brake pads, are they required for safety and best performance of brakes? Or are they there to reduce the amount of noise from the brakes? I just replaced the pads on the front axle due to the clips being broken off the pads. The pads I took off looked perfectly fine no noticeable wear compared to the new ones. Also I don't know why all of the clips were broken. Could be common I don't know. Have not looked at the back pads yet will wait till after the holidays. I hope they are still intact. I will wait for the flood of knowledge that will surely follow. Tom

Tom I had broken clips at 55k miles. I still have several still broken and have added an additional 20K+ Miles with no noticeable issues. Sorry I cant give you a clear answer, but Ill keep a eye on your post to see what others say. They are contained and its just a quieting device. I was equally worried about the liberated parts causing tire issues to others.

I am also inclined to think that the brakes preform as well without them. Maybe some added noise. But if it is a safety concern I will gladly throw more money at it. I wonder how many might be running around with them missing. Tom

Since I just replaced the rear brake pads as well as a rotor a on one side and rebuilt both calipers I would say that those anti rattle clips were a Pia work with. But I would imagine that they do keep the pads from making noise. The pads that I replaced still had the clips in except for the bad rotor side one where the brake pad was worn to metal and the clip was gone.
I found getting the pads in with those clips to be quite difficult. There's a trick to it and I never did get the hang of it doing the back one. I have pads for the fronts but they don't need it yet. Maybe the next owner can do it..
