First Gen Smart wheel

The smart wheel does not work and after troubleshooting, I observed if I raised the wheel up by the telescopic knob, then all of the buttons on the wheel work.  I looked up the wiring diagram and it shows slip rings in the wheel. Does anyone have advice or experience on cleaning slip rings?

The first generation use a spring instead of a brush and ring. Second used two springs to add illuminated switches. Coach information would be helpful
