Exhaust Work

Can anybody recommend someone in the DFW area that does exhaust work. I'm wanting to change out the stock exhaust to a resonator. It's a pre-DEF engine (07' ISM) so I don't have to worry about any of the emissions stuff. But none of the RV places want to touch it. I don't have the tools or the facility to attempt this myself.

It was more than 10 years ago, but we used Inland Truck Parts in Denton for our 2003

(Note that the parts list will likely be different for your 2008, and we had to provide the parts.

Robert,

Installing a resonator is not a RV specific project, so RV shops are not where you want to ask.  Instead, look for "muffler shops" that do a lot of business working on big rig exhaust.  They will have the appropriate sized exhaust pipe, clamps and hangers in stock.  You just need a skinny exhaust tech who is willing to slide under the back end of the coach and do the job.  You can raise the rear end and put your safety stands in place, which will provide more working room.  The whole job can be done with clamps - does not require any welding - which means they can work anywhere in the parking lot outside the shop.

Chuck is correct. Any diesel oriented muffler shop can do it. Make sure they incorporate several good mounts and visually check it clears the fiberglass exit. Keep an eye on that to make sure it doesn't migrate after it has been in service. Personally I prefer being welded with minimal clamps, both will be fine.

My 08 Nimbus has no DEF but it does have a DPF.....I don't know if you can just delete it and replace with a resonator.

As others mentioned, it shouldn't be too complicated for any big truck exhaust fitters to put an exhaust system together for you. I just did it on my 99 off a forest road in CO after the old fell off. Took me a few hours with limited equipment and held up just fine on the 900 mile trip to St Louis.

Noise volume increase is significant. Power may be a little better and managed a bit better fuel mileage as well.

Nope, not unless you otherwise muck with the emissions controls/programming.

Res777 has an ISM, not an ISL, and sounds like it's pre-DPF (there's a previous discussion noting that it's ESN-dependent)

If you do deleat I would retain it for resale. Your local emissions are also subject to change. May also require ECM to be enabled to operate with it removed. These are all unknowns and I would fully understand the costs of doing so. I use V band clamps and if removed with those reinstallation would be possible fairly easy. Need to do some homework with somebody that actually knows, not us speculating. IMO

Yes. I have given up my quest to remove mine due to being able to find anyone, even at Cummins that can answer me. Removing emissions equipment is a touchy subject. It was just a want for me and I have many others that are more attainable. I just wanted Res777 to know that he MAY have one as well. My coach was built in 2007 as was the engine ..even though it is a 2008 coach. And mine is an ISL 425. ... different from his...

Have you talked to any of the ECM reprogramming shops. They may be able to give you the answers you seek? Probably would be better to speak in person to get actual answers, not responses

Thanks Scott , do you know of any in the area or that I could contact? I'm in Phoenix. I don't really have to much of a problem with the DPF being on my coach,  though if I knew anything about what it was, I probably would have passed on the purchase. I just knew I didn't want anything to do with DEF, having had nothing but problems with it on my 2012 Chevy Silverado I had previous to pull our 5'er. I really don't like that I have no information on it in any of my literature. Also, am I just to assume it's doing what it's supposed to with the regenerations. There is no indication I know of about the filter differential and when or if it's "doing its thing". If the differential pressure gets high or if it doesn't regenerate is it going to send the coach into low power mode or something? I'm trying hard to learn about my coach and want to keep it...I just don't like not understanding .. any direction would be greatly appreciated...

When it regen's you will see white smoke and a lot of it coming out the exaust. If it fails to regen it will do as you mentioned and derate the engine . I've had the particulate filtered mufflers on a couple of ISX engines. If you remove the stock muffler and reprogram the ECM some shops that do engine work won't work on the engine. Federal regulation rules and issues. You may or may not have an indicator in the dash to tell when it's in regen mode.

No I dont. I avoided they problem by year. When I replaced y ECM i purchased one out of Texas. I do know a lot of owners of Dodge Ram trucks remove them. Ive even stayed pre 2007 on the Rams to avoid issues. Someone will know more than me. There may even be a simple work around to retain sensors ? All a big unknown to me by design.

Thanks guys... I will do a little more investigating as I can, trying to determine if the DPF is functioning. In my travels I have not noticed any white smoke coming from exhaust nor do I know of any indications on dash informing me of function. More importantly to me than removing, is the functionality not stranding me somewhere in limp mode unnecessarily.... If I come up with any more information on it, I will post ...and I know others will likewise ....thanks again      Now back to another week of 115 heat..

No reputable shop will remove any emissions related hardware. 
It's just a bad idea and against the law.

Keep in mind that this may also come into play when you're on the road. I'd hate to be stranded somewhere only to realize the local shops won't touch my rig because they're worried about the liability of working on it.

I'm past wanting to remove it... I want to know how it works, and if it's working ... so it doesn't strand me by limping the motor due to plugging or something else....The resonator turns out was just a nice thought..
