Hydraulic Brake Master Cylinder advice needed

So I've kicked the van down the road enough, time to replace the master cylinder on the GV. 1992 on Oshkosh chassis. Little background, after Christmas lost brakes, no leaks, could punch the pedal fast and hard and get a couple seconds of brakes. Managed to get it back home. Of course now that it's warmer, it works fine!  But still needs to be done, so here goes....

It has a remote reservoir on the firewall, MC is in the drivers front wheel well. I have located reservoir on top and remote versions. Can I just go back with a tank on top version? Or will the coach suddenly burst into flames? Ha ha.

Plus any tips on the actual task would be much appreciated. I am very mechanical, but never worked on brakes beyond replacing pads so a little nervous.

Try to match the mounting method and bore size first.
Then match the pushrod length.
 Wiggle the brake pedal with your hand to get a feel for air gap before the piston moves.
Make sure that you have some when you get done .

Correct.  You need a little free-play before the pushrod contacts the master cylinder plunger. But, only a little.
