pictures slow to open

I'm not sure if this is a tech talk subject or not but in the last few weeks I have noticed that some pictures are very slow to open and this occurs on any device I use; phone, tablet, pc.  Was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing this?

I found that instead of simply clicking on the image to view it (which can take forever or even longer), using my mouse right click to display it in a new tab works -- at least on my pc.
Try it with this...

The site is currently NOT automatically reducing the size of the images that are uploaded, that is causing the viewing slowness as most of the images are 2MB+ in size.

What normally occurs when a image is uploaded is the forum software resizes / compresses for fast viewing.  Most images from cell phones / cameras are pretty large both in WxH and in MB's.  To deal with that the software clamps the WxH size and uses a higher JPEG compression.  The result is images that may start off as 2MB+ are reduced to 250-400KB, perfect for online viewing.

Those are the basic nuts and bolts of the process, however for some time we have been fighting with random pixelation issues.  I'm sure you all have seen those artifacts in some of the attachments (its been very random).  In tracking that issue down it appeared to be occurring during the compression process.  In order to verify I turned off the feature so I could validate that is where it was occurring, and it is.

So next up will be to fix the program, but this new old toy we have has been taking all my free time and I've not been able to work on a fix.  I can certainly turn the feature back on and we can deal with the random pixelation, or have good quality images that are slow to view due to their size until I get a fix.

Thanks for the explanation Steve. I'm happy to wait for the pictures to upload I think that is better than the pixelation.  I appreciate the explanation and all that you do for this site.

I put something "to try" in place, lets see how this goes and be on the lookout for pixelate problems!
