Carrying extra diesel back to Hurricane Milton in SW Florida

Need guidance. Can I safely transport diesel in 5 gallon containers on 1998 U270 strapped down to rack on top of coach?

It would sure be a disaster in an accident.

And, if one leaked, would make a huge (and smelly) mess.

Said another way, I would NOT do it.

And, even two would weight 70+ pounds.

You might want to get a harbor freight platform rack for the back of your tow.  Keep the cans empty till you get close to your destination.  You might be able to get 30 gallons on the rack.

So about 71 gallons would be 500 lbs at 7 pound per gallon. I wouldn't do with auto gas but diesel is less flammable. This becomes the point of impact in an accident. FWIW

With the fuel in a rack, the danger would be getting rear ended by a panicked driver as you get close to the hurricane damage. Diesel is hard go get going but once it's on fire... You are not going to get much for emergency services if you do have and accident. Might be better to put some compartment stuff on the rack and the diesel in a compartment.

What is the purpose for the extra diesel?

For the near future DO NOT go back.

I would buy a diesel fuel transfer pump and pump the fuel from the Motorhomes fuel tank into the fuel cans when you arrive at your destination. Nothing safer than keeping the fuel in the motorhomes fuel tank.
20 gal removed from the full main motorhome tank will not be missed much.
I keep re-filling my at home diesel engine tank (Kubota tractor) from the motorhome  tank with such a pump (Harbor Freight).

I can only say that you should check with the DOT regulations in any state you are traveling through. Some friends of my son were trying to take fuel on trailers to Asheville from Colorado.  They were stopped and not allowed to proceed.
