Another tire question

Well it's time for tires again.  Currently I have Firestone FS591 tires and I liked the ride much better than the Michelins that they replaced.

I'm looking at Toyos this time.  I got prices for M170 and M171+ essentially the same price

Looking at the specs on the M171 they are significantly wider.  Inflated width 9.1" for 170 and 11" for 171+.  Static loaded11.1" 170... 171+ 12.1"

My question is..

Has anyone used the 171+? Do you like them?

Am I correct that the wider tire will cause rubbing on the steer axle or is that just the ground contact width?

Any information is appreciated

Looking forward to Quartzite in January

I'm a tire guy. Need to know the size you should have, have now, and what you are looking to install.
Note, that tire is an "L" speed rating, 75 mph. An "M" speed rating is 81 mph. If you need to use for winter driving consider drive tires for the rear or look for the 3 peak mountain snowflake rating.

Why not the M177 LRH, which is a very popular Toyo here on the forum?

Thanks Dennis,

If you look at the specs on the tires, it shows a different value for the inflated width and also the static loaded width for the tires.  The M171 shows to be at least 1" wider.

Where would the difference in width occur? Not tread width I would think, but is it "the bulge " at the bottom?  Or the overall width when inflated?

I know some people have tire rubbing on the front frame when making sharp turns while maneuvering into parking spaces.

I know many others have used the M170 so it would be safe, regarding rubbing

I may be over thinking the difference

I'm down to the Toyo M170 LRH or the Yokohama RY023 LRH.  The Yoko's are about $100/tire cheaper.

Size 295-75-22.5 Tires with filters applied

Tires I would consider. While pricey I had the Continentals on my 04 Tropi-Cal. HSR up front and HDR in back. Yes I drove it in snow and with those never had to be pulled out of a grassy or muddy field.

I may be a bit late with this: we bought new Toyos 6 mts ago, no rubbing issues, super road holding, stopping and ride. Great tire.
Having searched the forum regarding new tires we decided to go with Toyo and go up a size to 295/75R22, still load range H.
The Michelins are an old low profile tire size not used on new trucks and have a limited resale value unlike the larger 95's. The Toyo P170 has been used by some on the forum without a problem and were about $300 cheaper for 6 than the P177's.
The 170's are not your best choice since they are designed for delivery truck driving, where the 177's are for OTR trucks doing a lot of highway driving.

Thanks Irish,

My question was mostly related to the M171+ tires.  Their specs show the width to be 1" to 1.5 inches wider.

I have decided to stay with the M170, but will check on the M177 with my tire dealer

Since I almost never drive more than 350 miles in a day, the regional tire should be fine.  My assumption anyway.

Am I misunderstanding the difference between the 170/177 tires?

I just looked up both of those tires on the Toyo site. For the 295/75-22.5 I see both as an 11.1-inch-wide tire.

Dennis, I just went back and double checked the specs.  You are correct.

I'm not sure what I looked at before, where I saw a different width. Maybe a different size tire

Sites are listing these tires as "steering".  Th M154 and M156 is listed as all positions.

If you upsize to use the Toyo's they are a standard semi truck tire size, they are worth about $200 trade in at 6 years old (assuming you don't have huge milage on them), long distance truckers need new tires annually
