2002 u295 transmission temperature gauge

I have the 400hp Cummings with the Allison 3000 transmission. Transmission temperature gauge stopped registering. My mechanic has the new sending unit,but we are unsure if the transmission will have to be drained to install the new sending unit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think the sender is screwed into the elbow at the rear of the transmission.
