Dometic 1492 fridge

My fridge fins are freezing over badly, what am I doing wrong and how to fix? I hate to turn fridge off to thaw and loose all the food. Thanks Jim.

I have used a hair dryer with a towel under the coils in the past.

As has been suggested, use a hairdryer and use something to catch the water and melting ice. You may want to clear off the items on the top shelves and put them in a box to get them out of the way and keep them cool.
If you do this regularly it will be easier to control. Early morning or evening is better than in the heat of the day.
*My Norcold goes through an automatic defrost cycle every 45 hours.
ALSO, you may want to put an indoor/outdoor thermometer inside the refrigerator so you can monitor the inside temperature without opening the door.

Besides all the excellent suggestions on how to defrost and also adding 12V fans to help move air through the fins to decrease condensation, check the door gasket using the "dollar bill" method - it could be that the gasket isn't sealing well.  I don't think replacement gaskets are available for the 1492 (I seem to recall the gaskets are part of the door assembly and not a replaceable part), but I'm sure someone here has come up with a creative solution if that's the problem.

The seal certainly could cause the problem. You live in under 20% humidity and I bet it's way higher there. I thought you added the two little fans that passes air across the fins with your fridge defend?

All of the above worked for me.  When defrosting I just empty all the food into a sleeping bag for the 20 minutes it takes to defrost with a hair dryer.  The 12v circulating fans will really extend the times between defrosting.

Thank you for all the suggestions, I do have the 2 fans with the Fridge Defend and a digital thermometer in the fridge and freezer. It is cooler here in Sturgis and about 60% humidity. I had the setting on #4 and fridge was 40* freezer 1*. While waiting on responses I set the fridge to #1 and about an hour later I opened the fridge and all the ice on the fins was falling off into the fridge. I set it to #3 and this morning the fridge is 40* freezer 8*, no ice on fridge fins at all. Again thanks. Jim.

I can see the smile on your face. It's 109 smoke filled skies and probably 15% humidity or less here.  But at least the UV index is at 11. You're missing nothing and you know it. Wish I was there!
