TRANSFER Old "Yahoo" Site to "ForeForms"

Well folks,  I don't want to start any " Fires", but could the old Yahoo group site be forwarded to this site??  Looks like the Vote favored this site and the Poll also favored this site.  It would be great if when someone logged onto the "Yahoo Site" they would be automatically transfered to this site...  I'm sure once everyone jumps they will learn how to "Swim/Navigate" this superior site.. That's My opinion what does everyone think ??????????? ??? ??? ???  Gerry

Gerry,

We've not seen any final decision as a result of the polls yet.  If the decision is made to move to ForeForums, the moderators of the Yahoo Group stated there would be a notice on the group directing them to ForeForums and no new user posts would be accepted there.  There is probably no way to do an automatic redirect of a Yahoo-based forum if/when this does happen since the moderators do not own the site (Yahoo does, and derives income from data mined and sold to marketing/advertising customers).

We have no intent to force the issue - that wouldn't be appropriate.  We hope that this is the forum of choice, but that is up to the users who both voted in the polls and continue to "vote" with their choice of posting site.

Regretfully, I think that is the only way this is going to happen.  There are moderators over there, but the control is covered by Yahoo who is not going to give up anything.  And I think there are those over there who have no intention of moving anywhere.  Am I  :o, no!

Where are these "rumors" being posted?  Not on the Yahoo Group.  Why are Foreforum members constantly encouraging FT Yahoo members to switch?  Why are people hell bent on eliminating the Yahoo Group?  If your people enjoy the format of Foreforums, great.

Steve has put in days of work and time into developing the Foreforum, and should be recognized and applauded for it, but some of us prefer the email format of Yahoo Groups and find jumping from topic to topic somewhat inconvenient.

I really hope that people just begin to use whichever group they wish and stop denigrating the other.

I know you haven't seen me post anything here since you have built this site.  I'm sorry about that, but then I haven't spent any time on either site for several weeks, because of time constraints.

However, one thing I've learned Build it, and they shall come!  I still have some major time constraints for the next several weeks, however, I did want to check-in and see how "my site of choice" was coming along.  ;D  Steve & Michelle, I think you have done an excellent job and have done what you said you would.  There will always be those who will hold out even after everything and body has left.  CHANGE is one of the hardest things to overcome--no matter how well you build the mousetrap--there will always be someone trying to derail it.  Once you resolve one thing, someone will come along with another thing.  They will run you ragged if you let them.  Just don't let it get you down.  One thing you can definitely count on is that Yahoo will FAIL again one of these days, and there is nothing that the moderators or the users will be able to do about it.  Here's a little tidbit of information for anyone who seems to care.  There are features on the Yahoo site that no one knows about, because the Moderators have never activated them.  Some of these features have been available for over three years.  Sooooo, just because someone wants this or that, doesn't mean you have to jump thru their hoops.

Dave,

Don't worry about the format errors in your e-mail response.  Steve is aware based on a post Barry made last night and will be working on the issue tonight when he gets back.

I'd like to address this just a bit further.  I question what the purpose of the "POLL" that was created by John Lang was all about if the underlying reason was that no one ever had any intention of "retiring" and building a better mousetrap?  Since John L. is still signed in as a moderator of the Yahoo group and most of the questions from the Poll were rather unbiased, the statements by both John Sichenze (on the Yahoo site) and Don Hay on this site, seem to indicate that no matter what Steve is able to accomplish, there will ALWAYS be two Foretravel sites.  So why not stop all of our "belly-aching" and maintain both groups.  As I said in my previous message--Yahoo WILL FAIL again--that is inevitable!  After all, they only have 11,490,000 GROUPS to maintain.  Steve has ONE!  Need I say more?

The incentive to start this site came from a request/suggestion by John Lang when announcing he was stepping down as moderator that the time might be right to move to a more fully-featured discussion board.  The indication was a new board would be a replacement for the Yahoo Group.

With the implementation of "all posts via e-mail" in the latest major revision (granted, there's a small formatting glitch that Steve is aware of and is working on), the functionality concerns that were raised have been addressed.

We don't understand why there are some reporting that the e-mail capability has not/will not be available.  It has been in visible testing in its own board here for a while and is now implemented.

THe issue is not whether the new forum is better or not. It seems that some of the members do not want to move over yet. The fact is that this forum is still being built out but has been moving quickly.  I applaud Steve and Michelle for that. I also know that I have received more than a few emails indicating that people want to stay on the old yahoo forum. The issue is not only emails but how the emails come in.  I signed up for the yahoo forum a long time ago and it was not very large. It is now much bigger and it took a long time to get people to come on and contribute.  THe issue is not the polls but the fact that it will take a bit of time to get everything up and running and quite  honestly some of the comments I got at the rally this weekend and via email is that the new forum has only  a few people posting and the topics are broad based and not very useful...  THe newer members or owners may find it that way as well as a number of complaints on the posts pushing this forum. I look at both and respond to both.  I think that the issue of the email and the format is the sticking point and the fact that they want to read every post that way and to start posts that way. THose people post from their PDAs as I can moderate the yahoo forum for most things from my blackberry when I am not traveling.

So, there are no grand plans to shut down the yahoo forum right now. THe poll gave us the information we wanted but it also resulted in numerous emails stating that they did not plan on moving till the information flow was sufficient on this forum.... IT is not going to happen overnight but I think it will happen in the long run.  THe other fact is that many people do not search even if it is an option. IT seems that it is easier to just post the information request.

Finally, I have noticed that there are a number of foretravel owners who do nto use their computer very much or only use it for email. THat is not a blanket slight but an observation.  It will take a while for the membership to come to grips with the fact that there are two forums for a while and the one that has the most information will be the one that will get the traffic.

Finally, all of the foreforum posts are going to be discouraged on the yahoo forum. I would like Steve or Michelle to post a status or update so that the people there can be notified of the options but some of the other posts have actually had a negative affect if I judge it by the emails I have received.  The fact of the matter is that there are a few people who post more than others and have some information or cure that people seek.  Those are the people who are needed for this board to survive. SOme are here some are not and that is their decision not mine or John Lang's or Don Hay's.  Ourr decision after seeing the poll was not to say ok we are shutting yahoo but to see the mood of the group and to give the Cooks an idea of the number of people who are interested in switching.  My personal opinion is that we will all be over here in a while but not all at once or immediately.  The reason is that many people just do not care about the features and abilities of a forum and do not use them. They just want to read the posts and then the take the email they like and file it on their computer under different headings for future reference.  Thus, for many the email version is all that is needed at this time.  They like the ability to start and respond to threads too. I know that Steve is working on that and that he has done a great job so far. The idea that everyone will move over here as the site is being developed is not going to persuade people to move at this time. Later, after they se it work, we may see more people move but right now the number of posts on Yahoo are still going pretty strongly.  I can not see shutting it down till the traffic drops off and this forum is fully operable and people can log in. Right now there is a post where someone tried to log in and could not and then posted it on yahoo for help.  The think I have seen moderating yahoo is that we have some people who are pretty computer smart and others who are not and it will be a while till they all can figure out what to do and it will take advertising at the Motocade events to get people on as well.
Hope that clears the air.

Steve/Michelle,

Let me see if I have this straight.  I just was sent an e-mail notice telling me word for word what John Sichenze posted here.  But the following also was included at the bottom of the message (emailed to me):

If this means what I think it does, then I sincerely think there is something VERY wrong with this system.  That last line really ticks me off.  Why send the ENTIRE message if I have to come back and log in to read the message "before anything further will be sent".  This is pure nonsense.  Do it one way or the other, but to "threaten me" telling me that I have to login and read the same message all over again--I neither have the time for or do I think this Forum will ever SURVIVE.  I won't ever bother with "so-called notifications" again!!!!

No worries there, that's just a canned email template that I forgot to update, you can reply to the emails sent from the forum.  The intention is (and it should be working) is that you can reply to any email that the board sends out and the reply will be posted to the correct topic.

The only stipulation that I have on emails now (and its one we can change / tweak) is that each email can only be replied to once.  Each email sent has a unique code that the forum looks for when it receives a reply, it looks up that code, confirms it was sent to the email from address and if so posts the reply.  That can be changed to a time based or number based limit, its intent is to prevent spam as its easy to spoof a from email address but not so easy spoof in a unique code that was tied to a specific email.

UPDATE: Looking at this a bit more, there are two issues.

One is I had not updated all of the email templates, I have now made some changes but some more tweaks are needed to improve the format.

Second, and very importantly, in your profile you must set the "For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me:" Instantly and not instantly but only for the first unread reply.  Instantly will send out an email every time a post is made where as Instantly but only for the first unread reply will send out a single note, indicating there are unread post to a topic .... this option is for those who prefer to browse via the board vs via email.

Pat,

John just had his notifications settings to receive "instantly, but first unread reply only", hence he got that message which said no more notifications would be sent for that topic until he visited the board again.  Just a misunderstanding/errant mouse click.  Of course since he didn't realize what had happened, the message he got didn't make sense (he thought he'd subscribed to all messages).

The proper selection to get every message without having to visit the board is "instantly".

Hope that helps!  Sorry for the confusion....

So you are saying now, is if a member wants to have all emails come to them on this forum they can or they can just choose one of the boards for instance the technical forum and not around the campfire.  Can you also start a topic by email too?
