Had not thought about a small outer groove being damageable that way.  Interesting info.

Seems like I read somewhere how that thin strip is a sacrificial part of the tire to help protect the rest.

It's called a decoupling groove and is intended to be a sacrificial section to prevent odd wear from transferring to the main shoulder rib.

After reading lots of posts about this, and after a LONG discussion with Greg at Herman Power, we went from Michelin to Toyo M177 for our trip into Mexico. I never was crazy about the very narrow first groove the tire has. It picked up gravel way too easy. Anyway, no conplaints on ride or handling....BUT....I lost a chunk of out brand new tire on a rough Mexican road. We'll see how I am treated when in Nac early May

The damaged area appears, by the abrasion near the separation, in the picture, to have struck something.  If that is cord showing below the separation that is definitely an end of tire life situation requiring immediate replacement.

I will start mounting them over the next few days. Finally going to replace the front airbags too.

I just called the toyo 1-800 number to ask simple questions: 1) Confirm the dot on sidewall is where to put valve stem (this is correct) and 2) What are the lines on the tread? (they are basically a barcode for warehousing purposes).

Tires shipped free LTL truck. The guy called me when he was near and we just rolled them into my pickup.

I'm glad to hear so many have chosen Toyo and have had excellent results. I never believed the myth that you needed overpriced, failure prone Michelins with magical sipes to have a good ride. Mine came with a good set of Bridgestones that have performed excellently and will be replaced with Toyo's either later this year or next spring, as the oldest DOT code is slightly over 10 years old and I don't wanna push my luck too far.

While my info is not very current but for many years when I drove hundreds of various brands coaches to appraise their value as trade ins I made it a point to not look at the tires before driving them.

During the drive I made up,my mind whether the coach had Michelin's or not.

Then I walked the coach after the test drive and looked at the tires.

I honestly do not remember ever being incorrect as to whether or not the subject coach had Michelin's or not.

Not a story just to make my point.  Really happened.

No other brand has the carcass design.

If the absolute best driving characteristics are not as important as the money more power to you.

If I took a real potential high profit used coach in and it had marginal or older tires I spent Foretravels money out of my profits to change the tires.

Never had a single time that putting new batteries and top tires on a nice coach did not add to the profit for my store.

Less things for a potential buyer could knock my coach for and want a bigger discount.

Obviously if the actual difference in money between the various tires and batteries is a major issue then the others drive well.

The uni design is so good that the tires are only a part of the drive.  8 airbags, Koni fsd's are the majority of the "feel"

Just relaying personal experience.  I sold a lot of country coaches who used Toyo's new.

The coach drove well.  Just not the race car feel.  Kind of numb.  Worked but not the same feel

I still get a ear to ear grin driving our 40'  U320 with the Koni fsd's and the XZA-3+ tires.  No wander.  Dives into turns. Quiet. Plush ride.  As an old rv salesman and Foretravel manager it is my payback to be able to actually own this nice of a rig.

Thanks C.M and Ray Fore.  There are maybe better "park models" made but as a RV  this is incredible

I went to Herman Powers and showed Greg the tire. He said that the decoupling groove is similar to what Michelin uses, and even showed me one that had a similar issue. There was not cord showing on my tire. If there had been, I NEVER would have driven on it, let alone, drive to Nac on them. I offered to pay my share if Toyo would replace the tire. I told him I was not happy with the design of the tire. He said he sees lots of this type of issue, but said Toyo would not replace the tire, and that I would be ok. We rotated all my tires, and rebalanced them. Then I went to BigTruck Alignment and checked the front end. I am NOT a fan of the decoupling groove. He said that Toyo makes a M154?? that doesn't have it. All I do is dig stones out of the groove. Hope it all works out. Just thought I'd update y'all.

Lots of tires have that groove and I have tore it off many times on my crane and wore the tire out without issue. You should have no trouble with that tire. Of course this is my opinion DWMYH

The groove being gone wont affect the tire at all. Most trucks I see at work have most of the outer edge missing, and they run em like that for years.

There is no doubt that Michelin makes a good tire. HOWEVER all the rest are not junk, contrary to what some folks opinion is. Safe travels, and let's hope all our non Michelin tires don't blow out at one time. Sorry for the sarcasm but hey what can I say. As always DWMYFG, and be happy 😃

Never said they were junk.  Only that they drive differently.  Duh.  Most coaches would not show much difference during a drive

I am a big boy.  If you had sat in my chair at Foretravel and had upset customers in front of you many many times you might understand.

My feelings hardly ever  get hurt.  Lost deals worth thousands to me personally then went out drinking with the guy who beat me.  Work door closed.  Party time.

I just put about 2800 miles on my toyo m177. Smooth and I'm super happy. Mounting wasn't too bad. I use centrimatic balancers. I used bead sealer just in case, I don't know if it's needed but I have zero leakage.  I still can feel some of the small mold bumps after the trip on the tread.

They definitely ride smoother than the 2010 Michelin Pilot XZA-1 that were on it.  PS: I had both inside duals XZA-1 blow. No issue, as I carry a spare. But still annoying.

The M177 don't hold rocks at all (I live on gravel road).

Yes, I mounted the tires myself.

I've got a front end loader to break the bead but what did you use to R&R? Trick to avoid scratching the wheel? I've done a larger rear tire on my Case but it was really tough and I took the next to the tire shop. Talk about incompetent. They mounted the tractor tire backward and tried to tell me it was my fault.

The tires that blew were 2010. The first one blew back in 2016 and I made a thread: Rear inner dual tire blowout nonevent

The other (passenger side inner dual) blew fall 2018, same sort of sidewall failure, and same non-event control wise. Both were cool weather and inflated to 100psi. Of note, I ran the other tires (outer duals) until replacing with the Toyos.

In preparation for changing these tires, I bought a few tools that I been needing to buy anyway. To break the bead, I bought a ken tools KEN35926 ($153.30 at the time from tooldiscounter.com)  https://www.tooldiscounter.com/ItemDisplay.cfm?lookup=KEN35926
and
Serpent 4 piece kit: KEN35453 ($180.62) https://www.tooldiscounter.com/ItemDisplay.cfm?lookup=KEN35453

And a chinese copy 10 gallon "cheetah bead blaster" off ebay for like $60.

Tire bead lube and new valve steams I got direct from Bowessealfast: Automotive Parts and Tire Repair Bowes Seal Fast
 TC 77921    Tire Mounting Lube Premixed 1 Gal-1 Gal    1    $10.42
TV 27-555D    Nickel Plated Brass Valves with Grommet TR #555D, 3 1/2" 60 Deg. Bend Bag of 10-Bag of 10
RTC 960    Rema Tip Top Rim & Bead Sealer with Brush Cap BOWES RTC 960-32 oz Can

I got some murphey's lube too, but didn't use it, just used the Bowes brand.

The only tools I ended up needing was the serpant (by the way, watch the youtube video on them, they really are super easy to use). After pulling out the valve gut and letting air out of tire, the bead popped off when I just stepped on it. Perhaps it's because it's aluminum rims???  I haven't tried the steel wheel yet, so I will let you know. (I swapped over to all aluminum rims during this too).

For seating the bead, I didn't need the blaster. I just locked the air chuck on the valve and stood the tire up vertically like it was on the RV and it made enough contact to seal the bead and seat it. I did use the bead sealer above.  No troubles at all. (it wouldn't seat the bead lying on the ground flat, but once I stood tire up and rolled it slightly, it worked fine.

I was in no rush and did the change-outs over 2-3 days. I did some other maintenance items with the wheels off.

Thanks! I've struggled with a couple of big pry bars in the past. These tools look slick. Mike, I know what you are saying. I'm tired just thinking about it.

For a steer tire, I've heard good things about the Thailand made Green Max GSH100. It's a little over $200 but the online seller, https://www.ustireoutlet.com/products , does not seem to honor their online prices. Might be a little bait and switch here.

I bought a china made tractor tire for 200 less than name brand and thought I had a deal!! After ruining 2-80.00 tubes the deal wasn't so good.  According to my tire guy thay had weak sidewall and when you hit a bump the tire would pinch a hole in the tube.
I know tractor tires and coach tires are different and I hope you have good luck with them --But for me after having a blowout on SOB last coach and spending 2 weeks making repairs--I'll try to lessen my odds of a blowout with a name brand tire!
