Bathroom Tile Renovation

I've been pestering Bob to spice up our bathroom with some tile work for several years now and we finally pulled the plug on it and did it.  All I can say is WOW, what a tedious job but I think it came out beautifully!  We left the wallboard in place since it was firmly glued to the wall and used Bondera (an adhesive mat) because we could not sufficiently rough up its surface.  We were able to remove the mirror without breaking it so we removed the frame and mounted it with CRL 16" Mirraco Mirror Hanger.  All in all, I'm very pleased with the end results and Bob is very pleased to have me off his back about tiling the bathroom!!  As a side note, the toilet flapper gasket was not holding water and the original OEM gasket required that you remove the toilet to install it but the new one is a self adhesive which can be replaced with the toilet in place:)  Now she is holding water nicely!

We got the tile in Costco of all places and Larry this "project" took about 1 week total to do because of all the cuts.  Many "F" bombs were flying through the air during this job :))

Bob,

I can believe that it took a week. It would probably take me longer I assume. Sorry that it got "bombed" so much. I hate it that happens. Still looks great and professional. Still can't show the wife:))

Thanks for the kind words.  We love the new look.  The tile panels are 12" x 12" and we used Golden Select Cabernet that we bought at Costco.

I'm guessing they were taken with a phone.  That's the orientation the photos were taken in.  The phone can auto-rotate the display; the web can't.  Generally, you need to download and fix the rotation of phone photos before posting.  You might be able to fix it in Picasa/DropBox as well. what's the view from your coach's front window?

Just to amplify what Michelle wrote, here's a techie's explanation I've pasted from an online article: (Even though I wouldn't recognize an EXIF tag if it bit me in the leg.)

How could Apple make such a silly mistake?

Let's step back for a second. If you rotate your iPhone, the camera sensor won't know about it. It will simply record the image and save it to a file, letting the software of your phone do the rest. To make sure that your photos are displayed correctly, your iPhone adds information about the correct rotation of the photo to the properties of each image, which are specified in EXIF tags.

Your iPhone doesn't convert any images to correct orientation because that would keep it busy for a few seconds. Instead it simply saves all photos as they were recorded and adds information about their correct orientation to EXIF tags. This means that your iPhone is ready to shoot another photo within a fraction of a second, which is just awesome.

The only problem is that some software developers, including Microsoft, ignore the information that's stored in EXIF tags. There's a huge debate about who's right and who's wrong.

FWIW- As Michelle suggested, when I get an iphone image sent by my family, I take it to Photoshop and orient it correctly before saving.  If I want to fwd it, I also have to use Photoshop to "shrink" the image by at least 50% ........ or one has to scroll like crazy to see who's in the image.......irritatin' ain't it? :-(

I took the pictures with my camera and the orientation was upright but when I downloaded them to the foreforum they flipped on their side.  Not all of the pictures did this, just the ones that appear narrow vs landscape.  Not important, just wondering.

Bob & Faith,
It looks great.
I see pictures of what looks like a painted wall and a wall with backer board.  Most coaches of your vintage originally have walnut walls.  Can you describe what you started with and how your prepared it before actually tiling?

John & Tina,

Our bathroom walls have a formica type material laminated to plywood. We were originally going to use a mastic adhesive for tiling, but roughing up the surface for a good bond proved to be unsatisfactory. Bondura  adhesive is recommended over laminate and once in place is nearly impossible to remove.

Learned something new.  I looked up Bondera and looks like a great solution.  Here's a link for other's who might not be familiar with it:  Bondera Tile Mat Set - Do it Yourself Tile Adhesive On a Roll

Bob & Faith, using the mastic ( a good one like Custom Products) is fine on the walls and will set and hold very well. I have (and many other tilers too) tiled over a previously ceramic tiled wall in bathroom showers and with no problems what so ever, and the tile is hard and glossy faced. The Bondera is quicker without a doubt but you can do it with mastic too, and that is what I did on the walls of the 240 bathroom back splash.

To their instal I understood over laminate. Would mastic work as well?

John H,

Mastic would have been my first choice, except for the following  reasons:

1. Most Experts that I found on the internet do not recommend tiling over laminate. The ones that do, state that roughing up the surface is a must for a adequate bond. I tried several methods of roughing the surface and could not achieve a satisfactory surface profile.

 2. The location (Tucson) that I did the installation is very dry. Great for using products that need to dry quickly. Unfortunately I am not the fastest tiler in the world. Additionally all of the cuts that needed to be made slowed the process even more. I did not want to apply a sheet and have to wipe the mastic from the open areas. Bondura enabled me to take my time and not rush the job.

3. This installation is in a motorhome, which is subject to a considerably more vibration than house.

Bob,

I got that. "Smart tiles" uses a similar product to bondura for their peel and stick tiles, but they do not recommend over laminate.

Mastic is very sticky stuff I dont undrrstand the "rough" up since it will stick to ceramic or porcelain tile.

Anyway your  install looks good, like you said lots of cuts. Thanks :)
