Diesel Additives

The coach I just got only had about 1,500 miles on it since January 2017, and when I took it to FOT from Houston it started surging and loosing power about the last 50 miles.

While they are working on it I am going to have them change out the fuel filters on the engine and generator.

What are good or popular brands of biocide?

Should I also be using some injector cleaner?

Thanks
Steve

I used up my Stabil Diesel BioCide so I tried this stuff.  Both seem to be working for me.  I have no idea how you would tell better from good with this stuff.

Our PO used Stabil for diesel, I have continued.

I had our fuel polished and it was the cleanest fuel he had seen.

I had some surging and loosing of power prior to changing my cracked fuel lines, none since.  FOT should have no problem checking that for you or look at many posts and pictures to check yourself.

Biobar JF is a popular brand in Texas.  Even our Academy store carries it.

But, I would verify when you remove the filters that you DO have a bio-contamination issue.  Could just be old/blocked filters restricting fuel flow.

Your year coach is past due for a change of all fuel lines if they haven't already been replaced.

I just talked to FOT and they said the filters looked good but the fuel lines were not in the best of shape.

I need to figure out what size and how many feet I need and replace them before I bring it home in about 3 weeks.  They did estimate the bulkhead fixes to be $1800, that's better than I thought it would be.  :)

Biobor is a substance long used in the aircraft industry on turbine engine machines.  At one time I was collecting airplanes that had been standing for long periods without full tanks and they collected a heck of a lot of water from condensate within the tanks.
One military airplane had been in the desert for only about 6mths with low fuel and I had it filled, drained out a, 2gal bucket from each tank and still the left engine quit as I taxied out!!  There was so much water in that one that it took several more buckets worth to get it clean. That one was contaminated not the result of condensation.
As a point jet fuel/kerosene/diesel all hold water in suspension for long periods not like regular gas does, so the buckets we got out all smelled like kerosene, but were actually water. With gas the water drops to the bottom of the jar almost directly so is easily seen. Not so with jet fuel, and small tablets are sometimes used to check a sample.
The Biobor has the added advantage of eating up the Black Algae that forms in aluminum tanks when left standing.  That Algae in turn ears into the aluminum and corrodes the tanks/wing skins.
Airplanes may sound like going off track to some, but diesel and jet fuel are close companions, one just being a lot more refined and cleaner.

This coach has had no additives for a while, though the fuel filter glass is clean. I'm going to add Biobr. It's got 3/4 of a tank now and we won't be leaving until May. Can I just throw the Biobor in the tank now even though the engine will not be running for months?

Yes, that will give you 90% of the protection that running it would do, since moisture collects in the tank, and not the lines or filters or engine injection components.  Said another way, the tank is the only part of the system open to the environment.

And, if you have or can borrow jerry cans, top off the tank after adding the biocide.

With my 100 gal fuel tank, how much Biobor "JF" do I need to add?

We like Power Service products (powerservice.com).  Add gray bottle Diesel Kleen for every fuel fill.  Add Clear Diesel when storing.  Carry (but have never used) Diesel 911 for water removal and Bio Kleen for microbe removal.  We use Diesel Kleen as a preventative, not to fix an existing problem.

Our thinking is, the number one way to reduce fuel contamination is to store coach with full or near full tank, to lower the amount of air in the tank.  Cool air enters and warm air exits daily, leaving moisture behind.  We now also pour in a quart of Power Systems Clear Diesel with our last fill before storing.

Thanks Barry, when I picked the coach up a couple of weeks ago it only had 1/2 a tank of fuel and I am not sure how long it sat that way.

I am just trying to cover the bases up front.  I usually have 8 months a year with at least one Scottish Festival that I host a tent at and at least a couple more tripe in the slow time so that shouldn't be much of a problem  ;D

I like and have used the PS products, recommended to me by a tech for the lubricity improvement he thought needed by the C8.3.  This website should give you information for the differences in their products, lubricity improvement, anti gel prevention, preventing algae growth, etc. depending on your needs.  Products | Power Service  I also try to always store full.  This link helps you choose one of their products.  Find My Product | Power Service

I would imagine if you mean Ajo then my thought is it is so far from their shipping centre to be worth while- unless you pay for postage or courier. I keep a dozen amsoil additives with me all the time but do not need them with the diesel down here as it is the original stuff mostly. Great for lube and extending the fuel line life(mexican diesel that is)

I've had that trouble with other liquids, as well. Yes, we are in Ajo, 38 miles from the border. Amazon says it's because of "hazardous materials" they cannot ship.
