bose system

My coach has a bose lifestyle 20 music system installed. The sub/amplifier is under the sofa with the control unit above the dash, passenger side. The display no longer works, but I see on youtube how to fix that by changing out the capacitors. Is this the original system that came with these coaches? I am installing a new pioneer radio with video and would like to interface it with the bose. Any one do that? There are also 3 speakers behind the front above the dash and the radio that was in it was connected to those. They are older blaupunkt speakers. Sounds ok, but want better sound.  Also the cd changer was removed and in its place is some kind of mod, with a red light. Not sure what it does but have contacted Rich the PO to see.
Thanks,
Bob

that is to fix the display issue with these. If its the sub, then search on youtube for it.
The display issue is just some capacitors that need to be changed out on the motherboard. a $5 fix. Here is the link for them

Hi Bob,

We believe have same Bose system in our coach. (Can't verify that, coach in shop)

I had our remote repaired here, *REPAIR* Bose Lifestyle 40 50 P1 remote BACK LIGHT not working/faded+other...

It works well but because it isn't an LED screen it will always seem a bit dim. I didn't want to fuss doing repair myself. Our system sounds great. (Good enough anyway for us). I expect that our Bose being a legacy system will die at some point. Repairing the subwoofer, amp may not be realistic. Don't know. Cross that bridge then. Hopefully we bought some time.

Enjoy your new to you coach!

Thanks Mike! There will always be people that will repair stuff like this on ebay. The cost to ship it  vs new might be a issue. There are some vids on youTube about pulling the amp to send it in for repair. Bose has always been a proprietary system, and that means extra bucks to fix. The capacitor issue should be relatively simple to fix, I have to do the same thing on my samsung tv as well (but that's another story.). Its working you just can't see the display.
Just replaced my dash radio with one that has a pop out screen and a backup camera, but will use it for the passenger side cam. PO left it with the coach so I figured why not. Pioneer head unit, blue tooth, pandora, etc. I thought I could hook it up to the bose, but I guess not. I will have to use either the onboard amp and the speakers already in the coach for music, which don't sound very good, or install a separate amp and new speakers which is probably what I will do.

Bose told me a number of months ago that there is no replacement amplifier that will work with the installed sub and speakers.  We pulled the nonfunctioning system out of our 36 and used a sound bar and a wireless sub.  Worked pretty good to my old ears.  Our present Bose system in our 42 is still functioning.

Not sure how FT did it, but my build sheet says "Bose system with Sony AV controller". I have the Bose Subwoofer and double cube speakers,  but the control unit is a Sony pre-amp type controller. Have one forward, and one in bedroom. Might be worth calling FT.

Not sure what Bose model we have but from FT the only way you could hear the radio was thru the Bose system. There were no speakers for the stereo. Right after I got it in 2000 I added speakers for the radio. Since then I have changed out a number (lost count of how many) of radio head units and use the outputs to run to the Bose  for when I want to use those speakers also. The Jensen unit I have now with the pop out screen also works with the Bose unit.

You should be able to connect it to the Bose. Just use the output connections on the Radio and run Audio cables to the Bose Controller.

In our unit there were small screws in the laminate boards around the system.  we had a 8 track setting beside the Bose. I took the 8 track out then was able to take out the Bose.  It was messy because the insulation had deteriorated  and all fallen down from the front cap.  once I cleaned all that up it was much easier to get to everything.
Anyone have any suggestions for re insulating the overhead?  I am thinking of blowing in closed cell foam-- Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi Bob, Our Bose came with a cable that is connected to the CD player which has an AUX input split off inline, (it's not hardwired on the CD player). We connected our DVD there. It may be hidden in that snakes nest of wires you found. Maybe the AUX connection will work for you. I'm no stereo expert. I recall you said there was no documentation for any of the coach systems when you purchased. The Bose manual we have details hooking up auxilary devices. Let me know if you can't find a pdf copy online. I'll make some scans of the appropriate pages to email you.

Before I got to the part where you thought of the closed cell foam I was all ready thinking if I have the same problem that is what I would do.

After following this thread I hooked my dash stereo to the Bose unit to see how it would work.  And it does, only thing is the dash stereo volume has to be turned up high enough for the Bose to work so I get some volume out of the stereo speakers and a bit louder out of the Bose speakers.
Now to figure out how to run the cable inside the cabinet to the dash, now it's just laying there.

Thanks guys. The PO has all the hook ups on the bose filled. I could take one out, but he's got a good system there for AV so I think I will let that alone for now. Thinking of adding a 5 channel pioneer amp and speakers/sub for this head unit and use the Bose for tv. He also has bluetooth hooked up to the bose so it can play off the phone/tablet, but haven't tried it yet.

OK, so I removed the capacitors from the Bose motherboard per the Video last night, and soldered in the new ones. Wasn't that hard to do, but proof is in the pudding and I have yet to hook it up. Will do it today to see if the display works now at least. If not I am going to trash it I think. Never liked Bose, to proprietary. You buy a car with it in place and your stuck with it. Nothing else works with it. The only thing I ever liked from them were the 901 speakers but I couldn't afford them so had 601's and 301's. Sounded good, but not the same as the 901's.
pic is of the old black capacitors and the new ones I purchased on Ebay. Only needed 5. They are 100uF/50 volt capacitors.  And a dirty desk....

OK so the display still doesn't work, might be the display itself or possibly something else. So one more thing to do now. I will replace the entire thing with a home AV receiver and car audio speakers. I figured I can put new tweeters in the bose speakers, midrange above them in the overheads, and a new powered subwoofer near the dinette which will become a desk area at some point. Hook up a blue ray dvd player, a computer or disk drive, and I should have all I need. The coach I have has no front TV, so my plan was to put in a projection tv and screen at some point and that will run it too. and with the new tech, you can wirelessly send it to a ipad or notepad so that will work too.
That leaves me with wondering if I now need a dash radio. Just put one in the po left, a pioneer head unit, and I can connect it to a receiver, but wonder whats the point? I can sell it on ebay and by a back up camera with side cams instead.  How many of you use a dash radio instead of the bose or some other system?

Hi Bob,
I went through the same deal.  If you have decided to replace the whole system, then go for it and please share the results.
I did not replace the Bose for a few reasons:
- Rewiring a new system is like an open heart surgery to the coach, from the front to the subwoofer, to the speakers, and to all the way to the back bed room.  Cannot reuse any of the Bose wiring.
- Bose system sounds great when it works.  The remote control is Radio Frequency (RF) so you don't have to point to the receiver.  The bed room system connected to the front, and sounds nice for its purpose.

Here is what I did:
- Bought a complete used and working Bose system for $450.  I only need the head unit, so the rest is for spare.
- Add BluRay DVD, replace old TV with a 40'' Sony.
- Leave the dash radio alone because it got its own speakers.  I connected it to the Bose too using the Y-Adapter. However, it got not much use.  While on the road, Bose needs 110V. I don't bother to turn on the inverter or generator.

I believe that you have to sync the bed room remote control to your new replacement head unit.

The Bose wiring must be usable as my  coach came with a Yamaha RXV 377 unit and all of our speakers work for the television and the stereo system with the usb and aux inputs makes it a good replacement.

Wiring is all the same per se.. the plug is usually different.. cut the plug off and any head unit will work typically unless it has an amp.. little diff but again they use the proprietary plugs for the most part . Adaptors can be made with schematic ..

Side note.. anyone recognize the plug? 2002 u320 bedroom where radio was at one point..
